Why I am Running

Leadership you can always trust

I’m running for the North Carolina Senate because our communities deserve more than survival—they deserve to thrive. As a father, pastor, and former legislator, I’ve seen firsthand what happens when people are overlooked by Raleigh and underserved by systems meant to protect them.

My life’s work—whether in the pulpit or at the policy table—has been to lift voices, build bridges, and fight for justice. During my time in the General Assembly, I helped pass bipartisan legislation on education, healthcare, criminal justice reform, and economic development. Now I’m ready to finish what we started.

I believe our faith should fuel public good. Our churches, schools, and neighborhoods should be places of opportunity. And every child—whether in Franklin, Nash, or Vance County—should grow up with access to quality education, good healthcare, and a safe place to live.

Our district stands at a crossroads

Why District 11 and why now, you ask?

Because our district stands at an Economic Crossroads – Manufacturing jobs disappearing while new opportunities remain out of reach; Young families unable to afford homes in communities where they grew up; Seniors choosing between medication and meals; Rural communities feeling left behind by economic growth. But, we are also at a Social Crossroads – Achievement gaps that perpetuate generational poverty; Health disparities that cut lives short; Criminal justice systems that punish poverty; Digital divides that exclude rural families. And let’s not forget, there is a Moral Crossroads

  • Will we choose policies that divide or those that unite?
  • Will we invest in all our children or just some?
  • Will we extend second chances or perpetuate cycles?

When elected I will fight for: Economic opportunity for every family; Healthcare as a human right; Education that unlocks potential; Justice that heals communities; Infrastructure that connects us all; Food security for every household; Housing that families can afford.

While I am fighting, I will never forget where I came from, never put party over people, and never accept the status quo as good enough.

Too often, politics divides us into camps, reduces complex issues to sound bites, and forgets the human faces behind policies. I offer something different. For me, this isn’t about politics. It’s about people.. It’s time to put community back at the center of policy.

My experience as a nonprofit executive has shown me how to bridge differences and build coalitions. My years in the General Assembly taught me how to navigate complex policy challenges and find common ground. But it’s my calling as a pastor that drives my commitment to justice, mercy, and walking humbly with our God.

Our district needs representation that reflects our diversity – speaking to the concerns of young families struggling with student debt and housing costs, working parents balancing multiple jobs, seniors worried about healthcare and prescription drug costs, and communities seeking both justice and reconciliation. As someone who has walked alongside people through their darkest moments and celebrated their greatest triumphs, I understand that effective leadership requires both prophetic vision and practical wisdom.

I’m running because the challenges we face – from the digital divide isolating rural communities to the healthcare disparities affecting our most vulnerable residents – require more than partisan politics. They require the kind of transformative leadership that sees beyond political talking points to the human dignity of every person in our district.

That’s why I’m running.
